The Death of the Sedan is Greatly Exaggerated

Every year we hear that the sedan is dead, killed by SUVs and crossovers. And every year, a new sedan arrives that proves the naysayers wrong.

The Tesla Model 3 is one of the best-selling cars in Australia. The Hyundai i30 sedan continues to find buyers. The BYD Seal is outselling most SUVs in its price range. Sedans aren’t dying. They’re evolving.

What’s actually happening is market segmentation. Buyers who never wanted a sedan — families needing space, tradies needing tray — now have better options. The people who remain in sedans are there by choice, not by default.

For driving dynamics, aerodynamic efficiency, and value for money, sedans still make more sense than SUVs for most urban Australians. Lower centre of gravity means better handling. Better aerodynamics means better fuel economy or EV range. And sedan pricing typically undercuts the equivalent SUV by $3,000-$5,000.
